If the hypothetical woodchuck could in fact chuck wood, what exactly does this chuck entail? Is this woodchuck tossing wood around like that Geico commercial, or is it projectile vomiting wood? Or is chuck some old-timey name for squirrel and it's something like "big squirrel who lives in the wooded area"? Because I know some woodchucks (Oliver, the Happiest Woodchuck) and they live in grass lands, not wooded areas.

(Sorry. I know it's not about your books or anything particularly relevant, but that's what my brain immediately thought of when I saw the words "ask me anything".)

Ok... I have no idea! There is a woodchuck who apparently lives in a neighbor's yard down the street, but we are not on those terms....

Not a problem. I mean who would know these very difficult and complex questions?

1. Having re-read Hand of Isis recently, and remembering that you said Iras's storyline really suffered from the cuts you had to make, have you thought about including a short story about her in your next collection?

2. Favorite flavor of ice cream?

3. Favorite fantasy creature?

4. Kirk or Picard? (Or Sisko or Janeway, of course.)

5. Favorite way to unwind/destress?

These are all very random, I know.

1. I might put an Iras story in -- the problem is that the Iras bits that were cut don't fit nicely into Hand of Isis as it was published, because they change the story. That's true of most of the cuts. For example, Charmian and Emrys originally got together in Rome, and there was a wonderful scene there. It was cut and the later scenes with them rewritten because the thought was that it made Charmian unsympathetic and lost the reader's liking for her if she slept with Emrys at that point. So I can't use that scene in a short story because the book establishes that they got together later! There's one Iras scene that's similar, but including it would completely change several scenes of hers later in the book!

2. Strawberry cheesecake? Chocolate mint chip? Mango?

3. The phoenix

4. Picard all the way! :)

5. Sex. Not a difficult question at all! *g*

If Guide were to accept an invitation to join you for the day, what would your itinerary be?

What an interesting question! I'm not sure he'd find a day with me very interesting. If I still lived in DC there might be more things I could show him easily that at least he'd find useful, but he's not a social scientist and I am, so I don't know that he'd find many of the things fascinating that Teyla would.

1) With unlimited budget and a weeks' holiday, three places you'd travel to.

2) With unlimited budget, a weeks' holiday and a time machine, three places you'd travel to.

3) Elaborating on mari4212's question, what were Iras storyline originally going to be?

4) Seeing as you have a cat, what's your favourite cat moment? (doesn't have to be your current cat, if previous cats have better stories)

5) Coffee or tea?

1. With an unlimited budget, I'd go to Egypt. I'd love to go back to London or Paris, but there's much more chance that eventually I'll have the money to do that. But Egypt is expensive. Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor.

2. Assuming costuming budget for my clothes to attempt to blend in, Napoleonic Paris would be my top pick. That also avoids the dreadful problem of language -- wandering around ancient Babylon not understanding a word! My French isn't awesome, but I can at least make myself understood and comprehend more or less what people are saying to me! I'd love to see Paris before Haussmann, and there is no bad to a week in Paris!

3. Originally Iras was interested in Dion early on, but she never said anything about it and Dion had no idea. There was a break between Iras and Charmian when the Charmian/Emrys/Dion trio got together, because Iras was resigned to Dion only being with men, but when Charmian, who did not even love him(!) got into this thing with him, there was a big hurty scene. Iras and Charmian had a big conflict in the last third of the book that was eventually resolved, but it was the logical progression of the conflict over Lucan and the foreshadowing at the temple of Bastet.

4. So many cat moments! I think my favorite is our old cat, Alexander, who was immortalized as the feline Alexander in Stealing Fire, washing my daughter's toes when she was a baby. He would wash her tiny feet and she'd giggle and giggle.

5. Depends on my mood? Coffee in the morning. Tea later.

1. Humm. That's a hard question. There are so many I like, and I tend to be intensely loyal to the ones I love and watch them over and over through the years. The Empire Strikes Back has been a favorite for more than thirty years. It's certainly the one I've seen the most times! I also love Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest. Also Vanity Fair. X2, and we'll see if the new X Men stands the test of time! Also Cleopatra, the Elizabeth Taylor version, which has inspired me since I was five. Conquest, with Greta Garbo. That Hamilton Woman with Vivien Leigh. Possibly I'm stuck on a theme this week! :)

2. Currently running shows I'd pick Sanctuary hands down. I love the characters, especially Helen Magnus. There's no one like her on TV -- a female lead who truly embodies the archetype of the Queen of the Underworld! And I adore her consorts, her bad homicidal boys! In shows that are off the air I love SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, still love Star Trek Next Gen, and I still have a warm place in my heart for the original Battlestar Galactica.

3. So hard to pick! Sheppard? Teyla? Radek? I love the three of them most, I suppose, though I like the entire cast and there's no one I don't enjoy or wish were off screen.

4. Pimento cheese. No, ice cream. No, smoked bluefish. No, fresh homegrown tomatoes. No, chess pie. No, fondue.... Oh, you get the picture!

5. Again, so hard! I suppose if I had to pick one, just one, it would be Mary Renault's The Persian Boy.
