Which Book?
A reader asks, "You said in an interview that Black Ships was actually your fourth book. How many books have you written, and what are they?"

Black Ships was my first book published, but the fourth one written. I've started a bunch of others, but I'm only counting the finished ones here.

The first book I finished was a Classic Battlestar Galactica fan novel that my friends and I did together, and finished when I was sixteen. It was about 75,000 words, but it was pretty dreadful!

The second book was a mess of a historical fantasy novel which I finished when I was eighteen, just before I left for college.

The third was a historical romance set in the Paris Opera in 1881, which I still hope to sell!

The fourth was Black Ships, written between November 2004 and New Year's Day 2006.

The fifth is another Numinous World novel which hasn't sold yet, called Fortune's Wheel, set in the French Revolution, with the 18th century incarnations of Gull, Xandros, etc.

The sixth is Hand of Isis, which just came out!

The seventh is Stealing Fire, a Numinous World novel set in the last days of Alexander the Great's empire and the first days of Ptolemaic Egypt. It will be out from Orbit in the spring of 2010! One interesting thing about Stealing Fire -- Gull is a man this time!

The eighth is in progress, about 50,000 words in, -- a direct sequel to Fortune's Wheel called The Chariot, set in 1804-1805. It hasn't sold yet.

The ninth is in the research phase, a Numinous World novel set in Persia in the reign of Darius the Great, tentatively called Lioness. It is also unsold so far.

So I've got a lot of things going on, and plenty to keep me occupied! Which one do you want to see most?

I think that, given it's tantalising 'want-and-can't-have' status, the book I'm most looking forward to is Stealing Fire. 2010 isn't coming fast enough!

However I do hope we eventually see the Elza series in print :D

I'm looking forward to Stealing Fire too. I'm quite proud of how it came out!

Right now the next time I see it will be when it comes to me for copyediting, so it's in the process! (I actually finished it before Christmas.)

I certainly hope that one day the Elza series will be in print. I've been working on it for a long time, and I think eventually I will find a home for it!

My icon approves of this comment. ;-)

In all seriousness, though, I can't wait for Stealing Fire to come out. I'm really looking forward to it.

*G* I'm glad, and I think you'll enjoy Stealing Fire. It's very interesting to see this one, between Gull and Charmian in the timeline. And of course we've seen little flashbacks in Hand of Isis to Charmian's memories of being the Hipparch Lydias!

As a French Revolution nerd, Fortune's Wheel intrigues me. But I'm interested to see how male!Gull turns out.

I hope to one day find a home for Fortune's Wheel and the other stories set in that time period.

I think you'll like Stealing Fire! I'm very excited it will be out next spring. It's really interesting to see Gull as a man, different and the same at once.

I can't wait to see Hand of Isis in hardcopy, though I haven't acquired it yet... I'm partial to Age of Sail, so I'm hoping for Fortune's Wheel sooner rather than later!
