The Music of Steel Blues

One of the really fun things about writing The Order of the Air is the music! I've got a big file of period music on my computer, as well as other things that evoke the characters and situations, like Abney Park. I thought I'd share a few favorites that happen to be available on YouTube. So take a listen and enjoy!

At the beginning of Steel Blues, this is the song Lewis and Jerry are listening to on the radio -- "Louis Armstrong and the Stompers, out of Chicago". The song is Stardust.

One of my touchstone songs for Steel Blues is The House of the Rising Sun. It's best known from the 1960s recording by The Animals, but it's a much older song originally recorded in 1931. This is the 60s version, but you get the idea.

While I was working on Steel Blues, my daughter was very into The Princess and the Frog. Naturally it occurred to me how perfect one of the songs in it was for Steel Blues!

Sometimes there are songs that just speak to one particular character. This song is by one of my favorite local bands, and it's so perfectly Lewis in Steel Blues that I can't hear it without hearing Lewis's voice. See if you don't think so too!

Lastly, this is the song from the end of the book, when Stasi says, "Dance with me, darling. Dance with me until the music stops."

I'd love to hear what you think of my playlist!

Louis Armstrong!!! <3 Love this kind of music. It's what my gram always played. She had an actual record player at one time. Takes me back when I hear this stuff.
House of the rising sun has always given me chills. I could never decide if it was in a good way, but I sure crank it up when I hear it on the radio!
And I can totally see Stasi and Mitch dancing.

I like Louis Armstrong too. Though my granny was more Why Don't You Do Right than Stardust! :)

House of the Rising Sun is definitely chills inducing. And that minor key -- very Mitch on the subject of going back to New Orleans.

I can absolutely promise there will be more Mitch and Stasi dancing in Silver Bullet! *grin* In fact there's a bit of plot around a particular dance.
