Gil's name and a contest

A reader asks, "What is Gil's first name? We don't know, do we?"

It hasn't been mentioned, no. His first name is Angus.

Now -- a contest! If you can tell me WHY his first name is Angus, you will win a prize! You may pick any forthcoming novel of mine in progress and get a preview. That's any of the Order of the Air books (Silver Bullet, Wind Raker, Oath Bound, Invisible War, Night World, Diana's Hounds, or Dark Camelot), The Marshal's Lover or The Courtesan's War from Elza, Lioness, the new ancient world novel with Berenice and Thais, Cythera, or even the potential next Legacy book, Unascended. Prereaders can't play, as I know you all know why his name is Angus! Comments will be screened so you can't see each others' answers!)

Gil's name. I'm so glad it isn't actually Gil (as Henry implied in Silver Bullet). Well, the name Angus means either "exceptional strength" or "one choice". Both meanings work well for their Lodge, as they're out to save the world. It's a heady goal that few will really thank them for and there is no real reward for doing so. Also, I think the phrase "one choice" works well whenever someone derisively asks "Why you?" in reference to them saving the world. The response, "Well who else is going to do it?" seems to fit right in with the meaning of his name.

Also, it's MacGyver's first name, and perhaps the authors are closet fans. :)

That is a very deep and thoughtful analysis of Angus!

However, your second guess is the correct one! :)

Which book would you like previewed?

(Also anyone else is welcome to guess. We're not limited to one winner!)

Wow! That adding of the MacGyver was completely on a lark! It was as if both Angus's tapped me on the shoulder at just that moment.

Could I please have the Unascended preview? I'm trying to save myself for the Order of the Air books and avoid those previews (for the most part).

Yes on all counts, but you can't enter because you're on the filter where I said so! :)

The Order of the Air keeps growing. We started with six books. We're up to thirteen! OMG this thing just keeps getting bigger. Currently we have:

Lost Things
Steel Blues
Silver Bullet
Wind Raker
Oath Bound
Fire Season
Invisible War
Ghost Light
Night World
Operation Eagle
Diana's Hounds
Dark Camelot
and a still unnamed one, possibly Red Star

Angus spent his early years in the Scottish highlands where his father was a ghillie to a well-known noble family. That family, noticing the sense and intellect of their servant's son, chose to send him to a "public" school with their own son in England. The relationship between the two boys was strong but not particularly close, and Angus was known from early on as his companion's "ghillie" thus earning him the school nickname of "Gil".

A very good and creative guess! Unfortunately, not what we had in mind, but probably actually better! :)
