Unascended

A mailbag full of questions on Unascended, Stargate Atlantis Legacy book 7!

First of all, we have only just started writing Unascended. I don't know for sure exactly how everything is going to work. So everything is subject to change! That said, my best answers so far:

1. Will there be more Wraith? There will be some Wraith, but not nearly as much as in the previous books. The Wraith are not the major antagonists in Unascended and Endless, let's put it that way. I think Guide and Ember are likely to be in Unascended, but their parts aren't as large as they were in Inheritors.

2. Will there be more Lorne? Yes! And now that he's finally off crutches, he can do more action stuff.

3. Will there be more Sam? Sadly, no. The Hammond is returning to the Milky Way to do the stuff it's doing in Stargate Universe, so Sam is busy elsewhere.

4. Will there be a crossover with Universe? No, not really. There may be a mention somewhere of something, but our guys are in Pegasus and don't have anything to do with the events of Universe. Unascended and Endless will wrap up before Rodney is in the Milky Way in Universe.

5. Who are the main antagonists then? Sorry, I can't tell you that! It's very spoilery. Feel free to guess!

6. And yes, for everyone who doesn't know yet, Elizabeth will be back!

Mmmmmmm, Lorne..... ;)
I've always been glad Elizabeth found her way into the books. She was so good, and brave, and got such a raw deal on the show.

We really wanted to bring Elizabeth back. I'm glad MGM has finally agreed to it. And I'm going to enjoy writing her so much!

It was so awkward having him on crutches for the last three books! But since the Legacy books all took place in a few weeks, realistically he'd be still in a cast until the very end. So no boarding parties for Lorne! But now it's been a couple of months, and he can do the action stuff again.

Regarding 5, you don't suppose that some rogue grey aliens might be involved...? :)

Also, I know they're not the focus of it, but do you think there's been any sort of pop cultural exchange between Jen and Guide's Wraith? She's been living with them for a few months by this point, so someone on either side is bound to get at least a little curious.

Regarding number 5, hummmm. Might be! :)

I'm sure there is some pop cultural exchange. I think the thing the Wraith find most baffling is music. They don't have it. Why sing words to convey emotion when you can simply project it?

Well, they could still have music - it just might be minimalist tones arranged in a way that's supposed to be soothing (or mathematically interesting, for a creative cleverman) instead of how we use it to express emotion. Music is one of those weird but inherently human things.

I talked with a friend recently about things that would be totally weird and alien to extraterrestrials. We decided that 2D animation was one of those things, on account of it being just a weird thing in general. Overlaying pictures to create the illusion of motion - who would think of that? And more importantly, how would you explain it to someone who grew up on a world without a Walt Disney?

I can see that 2D animation would be odd! Though I think the Wraith would get that as some kind of symbology. I think they have decorative arts of various kinds, including painting and drawing. So it would make sense as symbology.

Will there be Stargate Universe continuation books too then?
The comments about before Rodney is Uninverse made me wonder that. I've never actually seen Universe since I only became a Stargate fan more recently and saw it on DVD, and was concerned about starting a series with no end..

But if you guys gave it the Atlantis treatment, I'd have to give it a watch so I could read more of your awesome books!

Re: Will there be Stargate Universe continuation books too then?
I'm sorry, but I have no idea if there will be a continuation of Universe. I know I'm not contracted for one, but I have no idea if anyone else is or not. I'm pretty busy with Atlantis! :) And I'm so glad you're enjoying the Legacy series.

Did Elizabeth get caught interfering with events around Rodney, or was he just the final straw on top of the previous dream visits to Teyla? Personally, I'm hoping that Rodney and Elizabeth's friendship can be more deeply explored and developed - she did break the ultimate ascended rule for him, perhaps?

I'm also curious how the Others find out and kick Elizabeth out of the club - maybe more happened between Rodney's trip from the Puddlejumper and The Hammond than we initially saw? Maybe Elizabeth decides to return voluntarily?

Ok, kind of spoilery but not too much.

Yes, Elizabeth got caught saving Rodney's life. If she hadn't intervened, Rodney would have died crashing the puddlejumper into the sun. Elizabeth could not let that happen, and so she sacrificed her immortality for Rodney. She transported him off the puddlejumper and into the Hammond's infirmary. She knew that she wouldn't get by with it, but it was absolutely worth it to her.

Now we'll see Rodney's reaction -- because even if everybody thinks he was delirious and did something himself or that somehow the Hammond beamed him out, he knows what happened. He knows Elizabeth saved him, and that she's probably out there somewhere. He'll stop at nothing to find her. And that's where Unascended begins, with Rodney's determination!

Thanks for that! I was really, really curious! I'm really looking forward to this. I know when Rodney gets determined he doesn't give up on something.

Excited
Can't wait, love the Legacy series. Though, I am a little sad hearing you say less Wraith development. I found the cultural information given on wraith life throughout the Legacy series to be the best part, such as; the very cool names you gave the Lantean Queens ( Carter and Weir, She who Carries many things...Haaa awesomes, very cool to see the Wraith have a level of respect for Atlantis and its mighty queens) Just the overall outlook the wraith have of those in Atlantis was very cool to see.
I will still read the books of course, you three have made a great series within the Stargate universe and should def be proud....But, I am wondering do you three plan on ever developing the Wraith story even more than in "Inheritors"? Maybe even with a book/s focusing on them in the Pegasus Galaxy, and the Atlantis program as an almost secondary plot? Not asking for details, just wondering if the idea has been flirted with at some point? and if you haven't, please steal this idea now!

Re: Excited
I'm so glad you're excited! I'm also thrilled you enjoyed the Wraith in the Legacy series. Being able to flesh out that entire backstory may have been my favorite thing.

Unascended will focus less on the Wraith, but they'll still be there -- just not the main plot. I answered your question as my blog post of the day today!
