Character game

A couple of people asked if we could play the character game as we come up on the release of Unascended on Thursday. Ok!

You pick a character in comments, and I'll give you a little peek at what they're doing in Unascended!

Unascended will be out in ebook from stargatenovels.com on Thursday, and then from other outlets in the next few days as they update their websites. Preorders for the print books will also begin on Thursday, with the print books due to ship on July 24. (It takes about two weeks to physically print the books.) Not long now!

Bronze, please, if he made the cut from your January post. If not, please give me another Wraith. :)

Bronze it is! Here's his entrance.

The last chevron locked and light exploded out. Five or six miners had taken refuge behind boxes, two of them with Genii bolt action rifles and the rest with mining tools. One was Fenna.

"Hold your fire," she said grimly. "Wait until you've got a good shot."

Three figures stepped through the pool of light, dark against the brightness behind. They were not Genii.

"Wraith," Dekaas said at Elizabeth's elbow.

The one in the center wore a long black coat and his hands were empty and held to the sides. He was smooth faced, a tattoo like a sweep of leaves and tendrils up the side of his face, his hair pulled back with a single bronze clasp. The other pair were masked drones holding their stunners at port arms. "People of Lorvine," the middle Wraith said loudly, "I have come to speak with you."

"Obviously," Dekaas muttered, "Or you'd have come through with stunners blazing."

Fenna got up from behind the makeshift barricade. "What do you want?"

"You are their queen?"

"I'm the quartermaster," she said, which seemed to satisfy him.

The gate deactivated behind him. "I have come to tell you that according to treaties recently concluded Lorvine lies within the mandate of my hive."

Waterlight has territory. "Killing Queen Death" has certainly improved her standing!

:D

This bodes well for distributing Jennifer's retrovirus throughout the galaxy. I look forward to seeing how Elizabeth interacts with all this, as she helped to make it possible.

It does, doesn't it? Which is bound to cause some interesting political situations....

They have already signed the treaties?!? This should be interesting seeing the reactions around the Pegasus Galaxy.

Oh yes! This is not a universally loved thing!

This new development would have been fantastic to see on the big screen! Can you imagine the Genii, Travelers, Satedans and the Wraith all on Atlantis arguing the details?!? Poor Woolsey...

I know. Poor Woolsey! The IOA would be nothing to that!

I don't know if she'll even appear, but I have to ask... Mel Hocken?

Jul. 7th, 2014 08:43 pm (UTC)
Sorry, Mel Hocken doesn't appear in Unascended. Maybe in the next book! Would you like to pick again?

Aww, I figured she might be busy elsewhere. ;D

How about Woolsey, then? I don't think many people would say Woolsey. ;D

Woolsey and Rodney then!

Woolsey steepled his fingers. "Dr. McKay. As much as I would like to believe that Dr. Weir somehow survived being frozen in the vacuum of space--"

"In the body of a Replicator," Rodney said. "So being frozen in space wouldn't actually have killed her, just rendered her completely incapable of any kind of movement or thought."

"Which raises the question of how she could possibly have Ascended while in that state."

"Maybe it doesn't require conscious thought. Maybe it's more of a Zen thing. And, all right, as far as we know it requires certain brainwaves that a frozen Replicator body probably doesn't have, but maybe something happened to unfreeze her, or maybe there’s a way around that, I don't know. I suggest we find her and ask her."

"Even granting the possibility," Woolsey said slowly, "do you have any evidence whatsoever to support the idea that this is what actually happened?"

Since nobody asked yet and I'm predictable as an atomic clock: Evan Lorne, please :D

Of course! :)

"Hey, it's the hot-shot pilots you have to watch out for. They're the ones trying to set the speed records." Lorne sobered, swinging his leg off the table. "Seriously, though …"

"The fracture healed beautifully. You shouldn't have any long-term problems, although I want you to keep doing the stretches Dr. Keller prescribed."

"That's a relief." He was acutely aware that getting killed and getting promoted weren't the only ways to wind up sent back to Earth. For all its frustrations, he enjoyed his current job far too much to want to wind up stuck behind a desk back home.

"For someone who essentially got hit by a truck, you got off very lightly," Carson said.

Awww, thank you :D It's so nice to see him get back into action! (and it reminds that somewhere in the long line of stuff on the backburner, there are at least two "missing scene" fics for Legacy waiting...)

For all its frustrations, he enjoyed his current job far too much to want to wind up stuck behind a desk back home.

And here fanon has taught us that he likes paper work. Bad fanon!

He may like paperwork, but he'd rather do it in Atlantis!

And yeah, his leg is finally healed. And he's pretty much forgiven Rodney, because he's that kind of guy.

Teyla or John. One of those two.

From Teyla's first scene, then!

Teyla poured herself another cup of tea before she answered. "I believe Elizabeth is trying to tell you something, but you may need to look deeper to understand her message."

"What do you mean?"

"If you feel the need to look for Elizabeth, perhaps you should try looking within. If you meditate, and open yourself to hearing the voices of your ancestors and guardians, you may find her there."

"I am not talking about a spiritual experience," Rodney said. "I'm talking about contact with someone on another plane of existence." Teyla looked at him as if that didn't make perfect sense. "She was there," Rodney said. "Not as a voice or a guardian spirit or anything mystical. She was right there in the jumper with me, just like we're sitting here right now, and she saved my life."

"I am sure that you saw her there," Teyla said patiently. "And I believe she did save your life, by helping you find a way to save yourself."

Does Rodney suspect that Elizabeth is an Ascended being or know so going by his statement of her being on anther plane of existence?
jo_graham
Jul. 7th, 2014 11:50 pm (UTC)
Rodney does. He thinks that's what happened on the jumper.

Sam! If she isn't in Unascended then Daniel!
jo_graham
Jul. 7th, 2014 09:55 pm (UTC)
Sam isn't. The Hammond is in the Milky Way, so no Sam this book. But here's Daniel instead, when Rodney finally finds someone who believes him!

"I think Dr. Weir may have Ascended," Rodney said. "When I was a Wraith, she appeared to me and spoke to me. And then when I was going to die, she appeared and saved my life. But she seemed to think she was going to be in big trouble for that. Like the kind of trouble where you get kicked out of a higher plane of existence."

"It's possible," Daniel said. "I'm told that while I was Ascended -- the first time -- I appeared to some of my friends when they were in bad situations. And then when I tried to interfere more directly, I got kicked out. But I don't remember much about what that was actually like."

"You just appeared somewhere, right?"

"Yes, and that's something that you could ask your allies if they've heard anything about. Naked amnesiacs don't show up in the middle of somebody's field every day."

Todd, please! If there is no Todd, then perhaps Ember, but not the scene in the jumper that was already posted :). It's so hard waiting for the new books to come out....
jo_graham
Jul. 8th, 2014 09:13 pm (UTC)
Here you go! The beginning of Todd's scene.

A scarlet-haired Wraith queen was sitting in a woven reed chair across the tent, white-haired males standing by her chair or standing about the tent in attitudes of what Daniel suspected was boredom. One of them he recognized at once, both from photographs and from his sojourn in the alternate universe.

"Hello, Guide," John drawled. "We always love to see you."

"Sheppard." The tall Wraith bared his teeth. Daniel wasn't sure whether to interpret that as a smile or not.

The Wraith queen stood, inclining her head, and both Teyla and Rodney looked up as if she had spoken.

"Hello, Alabaster," John said.

"Welcome," Alabaster said, but addressing Teyla rather than John.

"It is good to see you again," Teyla said, sounding more like she meant it.

Newton the kitty?

Otherwise, how's Ronon doing?
jo_graham
Jul. 9th, 2014 05:35 pm (UTC)
I hoped someone would ask for Newton! :)

Teyla nodded to the Marine on duty outside the door of Ember's guest quarters and then opened the door. *Ember?* she called silently. *Are you there?*

He was, of course. It was courtesy to ask, as she'd already felt his presence. Ember was sitting before the floor to ceiling window looking out across the city, the only light the bright reflections of the lights of other towers and the distant stars, more than enough light for a Wraith to see by easily. His dark coat blended with the black leather of the bench he sat on, though he rose to his feet immediately. A white ball fell out of his lap and picked itself up indignantly, washing one paw with a superior expression on its little gray face.

*The animal was friendly,* Ember said sheepishly. *I do not know where it came from. It simply was here.*

*That is Newton,* Teyla said, shaking her head as the cat looked up at her. *It is Dr. McKay's cat. No matter where he tries to keep it, it gets out and roams where it wishes. I will tell him where it is.*

You can pretty much always count on me to ask what the cat's doing. Because normally the answer is getting into something he shouldn't.

...Not like I've ever had cats before to speak from experience.

What's the cat doing? Getting into the guest quarters for the Wraith....

Such a cat! ^_^ Charming scene and good to see the allied Wraith getting guest quarters instead of a prison cell. I was going to ask for Ember or Newton but didn't know if it would be OK or not. I am surpised someone didn't ask for Ember by now.

I had to write Ember and Newton. Had to! Yes, he's in guest quarters rather than a cell, not that everyone is happy about that....
