Working on now?

A reader asks,"What are you working on now?"

Right now I'm working on several things. In the shortest term, I'm working on a short story for the new Stargate anthology that will be out late this year. It's called Precognition and it's about George Hammond, one of my favorite characters in SG-1. There's a lot of research involved because I have to write a convincing Vietnam-era dogfight in the F-4 Phantom, and that's the kind of detail I'd better get right because there will be readers who have flown one. Fortunately, there are some good audio tapes available of actual missions, and I can try to do a good job.

I'm also working on a Stargate Atlantis novella, which is tentatively called Mysteries of Emege. It's set post-Legacy and is scheduled to be out in April next year. It's centered on Teyla and Rodney.

Oath Bound is in edits, and we're still aiming for late November. I am so excited about Oath Bound!

After I finish Precognition I'm going to get started on the next Order of the Air book, Fire Season. It's set in the summer of 1939, so three years after Oath Bound. I am really looking forward to it. Not only will we have Pelley back as a villain (he's not in Oath Bound) but we will have some old friends as well. Right now I'm reading up on one of the historical figures who will be appearing, Otto Katz.

I am still stuck figuring out the last two chapters of The Marshal's Lover, so as soon as I have that straightened out, it will be moving toward publication.

I'm also in the first stages of a dark fantasy/horror novella with Amy Griswold which is set in New York in 1980. I'm really excited because one of our main characters is C.P. Cavafy! (Yes, he died in 1933. Therein is the story....) :)

So what do you think, my friends? Anything you're particularly looking forward to or wish I'd write?

In other words, this is a bit like the 9th book of the six part that was legacy? :)

Exactly like that! :)

We originally intended Legacy to be the six books that were plotted together, but then we had the opportunity to deal with Elizabeth's Ascension and do two more. And that was it.

However, a few weeks ago at Stargate Creation Con in Chicago, everyone kept asking for another Legacy book, asking when it would be out, and I kept saying, "But we're done!" "But you could just...." people said. Amy and Melissa said the same thing happened to them at cons this summer. Now none of us want to be the kind of author who keeps churning books out after there's nothing to say or who keeps on going with a series after it's jumped the shark. So we sat down and talked about it. And while we don't see another big book, another epic story, at this point, there were some smaller stories that never made it into the main plotline that we wish we could have written. For example, Melissa wanted more about the revivial of Sateda that she worked on in Allegiance. What happens when Mel Hocken gets there with a plane? What does Ronon do as Sateda begins rising? That's not a book -- that's a novella about Ronon. So what we decided to do was some novellas that could be done as ebooks and then put together in a print omnibus volume. Three smaller stories that tie up loose ends.

My story is about the Athosians. They've gone through a lot of major changes. What's going to happen to them as a result of the treaty with Alabaster and Waterlight? What will they decide to become? So that's my story.

I'm not entirely certain. Probably not, but I can't say 100% since I'm not that far in yet. If so, it will probably be Waterlight and/or Bronze. However, there is a lot in this book about the Gift, and I'm not sure whether or not there will be another Osprey flashback. There very well might be, since this is a lot about Teyla.

However, there are many Wraith coming in December! I've just had the pleasure of reading over Melissa Scott's Lost Queen, a 40,000 word novella entirely from the Wraith perspective. Oh it's good! :)

I'm excited about everything you mentioned, but perhaps a little more excited about you going back to the Cavafy novel. The snippets I read of your earlier draft made it sound really intresting!

Best of luck with the dogfight writing and the Marshal's Lover chapters!

Thank you!

I think the Cavafy novella will be really interesting. I say "the Cavafy novella" but he's only one of the main characters. I think I actually love Aphra Behn even more!

You know I always want to hear more about Gull/Charmian. ;)

I'm hoping to figure out the last few chapters of The Marshal's Lover soon. I'm just stuck -- my test readers didn't like the end, so I've delayed the book for more than two years until I can see a way to change it.

I'm so glad your friend introduced you to Hand of Isis and that you enjoyed it! It makes me so happy to hear that!

There are only three ancient world books in the Numinous World because my publisher dropped me. They weren't making enough money. :( However, there are two Numinous World books so far that are set in the Age of Revolution -- The General's Mistress and The Emperor's Agent -- and another to come soon! There is also a book of Numinous World short stories, The Ravens of Falkenau and other stories. Also, Wind Raker, in the Order of the Air series I'm doing with Melissa Scott, crosses over with the Numinous World with former Charmian and Agrippa as major characters in the 1930s. So there is more! :)
