No movies?

A reader asks, "What is the impact on the Legacy series of the decision that Brad Wright announced over the weekend to have no more Stargate movies?"

Thankfully, none. Stargate is owned by MGM, as Mr. Wright said, and the ball is in their court about the future of the franchise. MGM has already approved the Legacy series in concept, contracts are already signed, etc. Fortunately, the Legacy series does not cost MGM anything. All the financial risks are taken by Fandemonium, though MGM of course collects royalties on every copy sold. So for MGM the Legacy series is free money! They collect royalties with zero costs.

In terms of where that leaves the series, I think a good parallel is Star Trek in the 70s. There was a remarkable fan community and there were ongoing novels that kept the series alive and fed fannish hunger, and eventually Star Trek came back, both on the big screen in the movies and as Star Trek The Next Generation. I expect that Stargate will do the same. It's been so popular for so long that I find it hard to believe that in five years or ten years someone won't get the green light to start a new series or to continue the story in some way. In the meantime, we'll just keep writing!

Audiobooks...?
Now if we could just persuade Big Finish / Fandemonium / MGM to turn the Legacy books into a series of audio-books (with as many of the cast as possible)...I'd be in seventh heaven. Seriously, it's got to be do-able, and a heck of a lot cheaper than a movie-of-the-week. And being able to listen to the cast speak the lines you've written....so cool.

I kinda like the idea of Legacy being the 'real' continuation of SGA post-EATG, and not being jossed in an undoubtedly horrible way if BW & co were able to get the greenlight for Extinction. Then again, it would be nice to see the script for Extinction published in some format...somewhere, so we could see how TPTB were going to wrap the storyline.

How do I start a campaign for Legacy audiobooks? Anyone with me on this one?

Re: Audiobooks...?
I would love for there to be audiobooks of the Legacy series. I don't think that's entirely out of the question! Of course having the cast is expensive, so I think the big question is whether sales would justify it. If they would, it might be a possiblity.

I'm late to this party, but you have said what I have previously...the Stargate fanchaise is much like Star Trek's in terms of fan loyalty and I can see it getting back on tract in the near future NOW whether Wright,JM or the others are involved is another matter.

As for the book series I would hope that the fan reception will help the MGM people see that potential sooner rather than later. The books are well done and certainly a lesson that the writers in S5 could have taken in terms of story development.

I think there's no way this is the end for Stargate. It's too popular. There will be a new story down the line. And in the meantime I'm glad you like the books! We do our best.

I'm really glad to hear your positive take on this. I came late into Stargate, Don't have cable so I have been watching on Netflix, and was so disappointed to hear, for now, that there would not be a movie. On the other hand, it's great to have the books, I've been working my ways through the early books. I did read and loved Death Wish so I am excited about Legacy.
