In Real Life

I was doing the little getting to know you author questionnaire for the Simon & Schuster website, and one of the questions was about what you sound like in real life. Actually, it's really funny. I write this very formal, very lush historical prose, but in real life I sound like a Valley Girl. Like totally. Like seriously totally dude. Like, Octavian is just like gag me with a spoon! Totally grody! I mean, dude. How can you even? Like there's this store and it has these statues of Octavian, like totally buff and stuff for people to put in their gardens! Like who would want a statue of naked Octavian in their garden? That is like gross to the max. For sure. Seriously. Like, wouldn't you rather have Napoleon? Only he, like, had way too much taste to have a naked statue of himself in his own garden. Seriously. OMG.

So here's the original song Valley Girl for your morning, courtesy of the year I was fifteen, the same age as Moon Unit Zappa, who does the like totally cool talking parts!

So go forth my friends! And dudes, be excellent to each other!

Seriously! Of course I can speak properly. I worked in politics for fifteen years. But when I'm on my own time with my friends I sound like a Valley Girl with Cameron Mitchell's accent! And sometimes I do have to go back over a passage and remove the extra reallys and totallys.

Imagine a Valley Girl with Cameron Mitchell's (from SG-1) southern accent! That's me.

Like, Wellington did have a naked statue of Napoleon in his house! How come?

OMG! We like totally had that conversation!

You know, I do not even know what was up with Wellington and that statue! Every time I see a picture I bust out laughing. It's really very....

I write exactly as I speak. Which is funny because I once had someone read one of my works and she commented that my language was too stilted, that NO ONE actually spoke that way. I let my daughter, who is 33, read the work and she said, no that I actually did speak that "stilted."

*g* I think most people write as they speak. But as I grew up I had to stop sounding professionally like I belonged in a John Hughes movie, so I did, but I still sound like that at home.
