Steel Blues

A reader asks, "What are you working on now?"

Right now I'm working with Melissa Scott on the sequel to Lost Things. It's called Steel Blues and will probably be out early next year! The scene I'm working on today is a flashback scene to Budapest in 1919, and I'm really wrestling with it. Here's a shout out of thanks to Andrea and Zoli in Budapest for checking me on some things and giving me a really important bit of information!

This scene is also a really good example of why I have prereaders. Writing something with suspense means a slow reveal of things that happened in the past, and it has to work so that the reader is interested and their sympathies are engaged, but at the same time so that there is a true sense of jeopardy. In other words, they have to want the main characters to succeed but not be certain they will. Too far one way and they don't like the characters enough to truly worry about them. Too far the other way and there aren't high stakes. Fortunately, I have a wonderful group of prereaders who read everything as I write it and can tell me which way things are tilting and help me keep the balance.

I can also help you with that Budapest scene, if you need more help. I live in Budapest.:)

Thank you! It's wonderful to have more brains to pick, especially ones with the good taste to be Helen Magnus fans! :) I'm a huge Sanctuary fan myself.
