Avengers = Furies

OK! Some big news today on the fourth book of the Legacy series! Because of the movie out right now named The Avengers, the fourth Legacy book formerly known as The Avengers is getting a name change to The Furies! Apparently MGM was concerned that people would think this was the novelization of the movie and be confused. So

THE FURIES!

Also, the manuscript is back from MGM and going through edits. We have an official final release date of JUNE 28! Yes, absolutely and positively, The Furies will be out on June 28. So hang on to your hats! Here we go!

Does this mean Rodney won't be making a trinium shield for John to fight Wraith with?

Yay! Although I first read "Furies" as "Furries" and came away with a completely different idea of the book :). Wraith plushie, anyone?

Er, no! Not that kind of book! ;)

But a Wraith plushie would be nice!

Why would there really need to be a title change? You have the right to keep the title and also shows that the book isn’t related to “The Avengers” movie because unless someone is blind, they should easily be able clearly see the text: StarGate Atlantis right on the top of the book in all capital letters. Plus according to the original online list that I found for all of the StarGate Atlantis Legacy Series books, the title wasn't "The Avengers" any ways, it was only: "Book 4: Avengers". I don't see any confusion there at all!

Here is the exact list that I am talking about; I copied it from the site I got it on to have it to know what books were in the entire series.

The STARGATE ATLANTIS Legacy Series:
Book 1: Homecoming
Book 2: The Lost
Book 3: Allegiance
Book 4: Avengers
Book 5: The Secret
Book 6: The Inheritors

****

In my opinion, the title change is completely stupid and illogical. After all, to make my case and point, there are many books that have the same title as other books, the only difference is the authors, the publishers, the cover art and thus there isn't any confusion, especially in this case the cover won't even be showing anything related to "The Avengers" movie and that should shoot all confusion to smithereens immediately.

Honestly, I don't get this change at all. It just sounds stupid.

I don't have any control over the title change. Sorry! It's up to MGM.

"Dear MGM,

If you'd moved off your asses and gotten the book out six months ago as per schedule YOU WOULDN'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM.

Foresight: can has. But clearly, you don't.

no love,
T."

Well, there was a delay due to MGM's bankruptcy and sale. Just one of those things!

What Tielan said, exactly!

Unfortunately, I also understand the reason for this change...sort of. There would undoubtedly be some intellectually challenged people, who might pick up the book with little / no prior knowledge of the Legacy series (yes, shocking as it is to us devotees), and then start opining that 'oh look...Stargate Atlantis is trying to cash in on all things Avengers, by using the same title'. Yes, I know - it's stupid, ludicrous, and would have been totally avoided if, as Tielan says, MGM had got off their collective backsides several months ago.

It seems to me that the Legacy series is being bought/read by fairly long-term and/or dedicated SG fans, who know their Atlantis and Fandemonium titles inside and out. None of these folk are likely to likely to mix up "SGA : (The) Avengers" with "Marvel's The Avengers". And I would hazard to say that the casual purchaser isn't likely to dive in with book 4 of the series (regardless of the title) - they'd start at book 1 and work through...in which case the reason for the title change is and will continue to remain specious.

From everything I've read so far about this book, Avengers has the right ring to me. Furies - not so much. But that certainly won't stop me buying it the moment it's released. Roll on 28th June - a slightly belated birthday present to me :-)

Unfortunately, I don't have anything to do with the title choice. It's up to MGM!

I did wonder when the title was first announced if this would happen - I'm quite happy with the change, personally, as now I won't have to fight off images of Captain America every time I scan past the words! Yes, I quite understand that the name of the Ancient warship is 'Avenger', and sure, 'The Avengers' made sense in reference to her crew and, presumably, to the upcoming grudge matches being played off between the various factions... but 'THE AVENGERS' as a title for anything in this year of Marvel's big release - not gonna fly! I like 'The Furies' much better, actually - neat classical ref, much more going on around the name vis-a-vis what goes around, comes around and so on... and it doesn't make me think automatically of Spandex. So, ladies and gennlemen, we have a winner!
Putting a big marker on June 28th on my calendar right now. And I'd better get moving on my re-read of the first three Legacy books, too - I've been ambling my way through 'Death Game', so I've got a bit of catching up to do! Ahh, happy chore! You must be very excited now they've named the day. What's up next for you?

Well, the title was originally proposed in August 2009, long before there was a Marvel movie! But things change, and so does the title! I hope you enjoy the book.

Up next for me -- a whole bunch of things. The next Stargate book is Secrets, which is supposed to be in the late fall.

My next book release is Lost Things, a Raiders of the Lost Ark-ish adventure novel written with Melissa Scott, which will be out in ebook July 9 and paperback August 1. I'm very, very pleased with it. It's a team story the way Stargate is, but the feel of the story and the mixture of archaeology and adventure and fantasy and light romance is very Indiana Jones. I hope you give it a try!

Whoopee! June 28th is just in time for me to get the book before I go on holiday-so I can drool over it at leisure!
Name change has to do purely with US lawyers busily covering corporate asses against lawsuits and has no artistic relevance. Poor you-it must be annoying.
Keep up the good work!

I hope you enjoy it! The name change is just about the legal issues and not starting a problem with Marvel. Just an accident that there is a movie at the same time.

Re: Where?
I have no idea which book stores will choose to carry it and no control over that. Obviously I wish they all would! But they should certainly be able to special order it for you if they don't carry it. Now, whether they will go to the trouble is up to them!
