The Inheritors

A reader asks, "How does it feel to be nearly done with the Legacy series?"

A little sad, actually! I've been working on the Legacy series for more than three years now, and it's been wonderful. I've loved continuing the story of Stargate Atlantis and living with these characters. I don't know yet if this will be the last Stargate Atlantis book, but it might be, so we're very conscious that this needs to be a finale. It needs to tie things up in a way that's really satisfying so that if this is the end, people feel like it ends as it should and aren't frustrated. So no, The Inheritors doesn't end on a cliffhanger like the other Legacy books have.

Does that mean there are no plots to resolve in another book?

There are certainly things we could do in another book, in another "season", if there is one. There are more stories to tell. This story wraps up. But there are plenty of things for readers to think about and continue the story themselves, and there is certainly one plot line I'd want to pursue if I had the chance.

I never read through the end of The Inheritors without crying, actually. I'm very emotional about these characters too! And I'm proud of the work we've done and the story we've told. There are some big ideas here as well as lots of space battles, something that's always been true of Stargate.

What about the title? Who does it refer to?

The heirs of the Ancients -- all of them -- the people of Earth and the people of Pegasus and the Wraith. All of the daughters of the Ancestors, as Teyla would say.

I'm so very excited for The Inheritors and I was wondering about its epigraph. I think you may have posted it elsewhere, but I can't find it. Could you let us know? I loved what you've chosen so far, especially the Millay and Marvell selections - they were just right.

Re: Epigraphs
Actually, we don't have one yet! I need to find the perfect one still.

Were I writing a story in the Pegasus Galaxy, it would be one where an antagonist was a mid-tier Goa'uld who had escaped the final destruction of the other Goa'uld in the Milky Way, made its way to the Pegasus Galaxy, and, unbeknownst to the other Wraith, managed to possess as its host the body of a Wraith queen and take control via that of her followers as its new army.
And nobody in the Pegasus Galaxy, including the Atlantis contingent, would know that the Wraith queen in the story, as she rose to prominence, was being controlled by a Goa'uld for some time to come in the story.

Just wanted to let you know that the wait for The Inheritors has been so painful that I had to buy three more of your books on Amazon. Heh. Moebius Squared I'm already 3/4 done with (what a time travel/egypt nerdgasm that is), and then I have Death Game and Lost Things to look forward to.

Consequently, is Death Game tied in to the Legacy series at all? Like, if I had read it first, would I have caught any references to it in the series?

I'm glad you're enjoying Moebius Squared! "timetravel/egypt nerdgasm" is pretty much the perfect description! That's definitely how it felt writing it!

Death Game is the same continuity, though there's not anything you HAD to know for the Legacy series. Teyla's story about Death and the deserted city on Athos is interesting and important backstory, but Legacy works fine if you haven't read it yet. And there's the beginning of the Radek and Ronon friendship that we see in the Legacy series, as Radek and Ronon are stuck together for most of the book! It was kind of an odd idea, but then they turned out to be so much fun together. Also Mel Hocken is introduced. My editor liked her so much that she asked for Mel to come back in the Legacy series.

I'm so glad you got Lost Things! I hope you enjoy it! Drop me a line and let me know what you think, if you don't mind.

Right now I'm finishing the final edits to go back to MGM for final approval. I expect to finish them up today. So I am guessing three or four weeks from this point! (We just got the edits back on Friday, so that's a three day turnaround!)
