Things not in the books

A reader asks, "Are there things you wanted to explore more in the Legacy series that you didn't? Maybe stories you wanted to tell?"

Oh yes! So many. But we were limited by space -- we knew we had approximately 600,000 words, which seems like a lot until you start working out what it will take to tell the story as it stands. Some examples:

The Travelers -- we decided early on that the Travelers were their own story. If we brought them in we'd have to develop them as fully as the Wraith, the Genii, and the Satedans. There just wasn't room to fully develop another culture in the space we had. Ditto the Pegasus Asgard. And so rather than dump them in we left them for another time.

More time with the second tier of characters -- I wish we'd had space to explore some of the second tier more -- Laura Cadman is a personal favorite of mine, and I gave her as much space and character development as I could. Radek Zelenka is another. Evan Lorne is another. I really wish we could have had more Cameron Mitchell, but it was barely possible to get him in for a cameo. We had to make a conscious decision to limit the amount of time that SG-1 characters who never appeared in Atlantis got. Basically more time for everyone!

More exploring. I love the exploring parts. But it is kind of dull to watch people walk around and look at things, so a lot had to be summed up as, "Look, sir! Here it is!"

When we started 600,000 words seemed so big! As we got into it we kept running out of space. I think we could have done 800,000!

I wish we could have more books from you to explore these other characters / races. If the legacy series is anything to go by they would be brilliant.

Thank you! I wish we'd had a lot more room! Well, and that we hadn't had MGM's strict limitations on what we could do. I think that's one thing I love about doing the Order of the Air series with Melissa (Lost Things and Steel Blues out so far) is that we don't have those kinds of limitations and can actually explore a little more.

I can imagine the restrictions were a tough thing to get past, and the temptation to write some of the stories the way you wanted must have bitten hard. Writing canon does that I reckon, so going off the rails on secret pr0n jag is beneficial to get it outta the system. To me, anyhow, because my files are littered with stuff too raunchy to see the light of day. :o

Well, the issue for me wasn't sex scenes at all, but actually dealing with real world issues like child custody!

Were there many deleted scenes that you and your co-authors had actually written but ended up having to cut purely for reasons of length, or was it more a case of staying away from potential arcs in Legacy like the Travelers altogether?

By the way, I was wondering what happened to Lorne, Cadman and the Genii aboard the Pride in the aftermath of uh, major events, in the Inheritors? Did they hang around Atlantis for a while to train up the crew and do any repairs, or just go straight back to the Genii planet?

PS - I just realised that I forgot to post in the Inheritors reaction thread. Well, I loved it, pure and simple!

None of the scenes that were written and cut were cut for reasons of length.

But, in terms of planning, lots of things were. For example, we talked about the Travelers before we began The Lost and decided that having a sequence in The Lost in which they contact the Travelers and try to get information about Rodney but then the Travelers are unable to just added too much length. We had to stay below 110,000 as a hard ceiling, and around 100,000 preferably, and the Travelers plot in The Lost would have added 15,000 words or so. So that's an example of choosing in the planning stages that there just wasn't room for something.

I think they did hang around Atlantis for a while to repair before they went back. Carter reclaimed Cadman! She'd been loaned to Sheppard long enough!

I'm so glad you loved The Inheritors! Thank you!

Things not in the book: The exact reason why Sheppard was rather 'breathless' and 'busy' when Zelenka interrupted him at the beginning of the book? ;)

I'm only about halfway through Inheritors so I'll report back when I'm done with it so far I'm loving it.

Heh. That actually wasn't my scene, so you'll have to ask Melissa! ;)

I think you mentioned a "missing" scene where the Wraith met Newton, right? How do you suppose that would go down?

I can see Darling and Torren having great fun playing with him... And of course Darling wanting a kitten of his own.

Is there any way we can get those missing scenes here? ;) or maybe privately in an email....:) *coughs innocently* Oh, maybe some good ol' John and Teyla scenes. ;)

yeah, like what in the world he was breathlessly doing when Zelenka interrupted him?! ;) innocently *coughing* right along with you, Jeyla! Although I suppose if we got desperate enough, we *could* just write them ourselves! lol.

ETA: oh wait, that was melissa's scene wasn't it, pardon, I've worked all weekend and obviously need another cuppa. I'd tag her in this one to catch her attention, but obviously my brain is broken this morning and I can't remember how to do this in a comment.

These books were a great read. I really hope that you are considering a new series to continue the Atlantis story. Maybe eventually MGM will let you even provide an end to the Atlantis story.

I certainly hope there is never an end to the Atlantis' story!
