Ouroboros

I'm rereading Melissa Scott's new Stargate book, Ouroboros and I have to say that I love it! I read it in draft, so I hadn't seen the final before, and it's so much fun. It's an SG-1/Atlantis crossover with an AU Atlantis where the expedition is in its usual amount of trouble, but the Genii fell to the Wraith instead of Sateda and Ronon has never been a Runner. Also, Guide's original hive is intact, and that's the most fun part of the book to me. Snow, Guide, Seeker, and Spark are the most charming and dear Wraith ever. I could read an entire book about the adventures of Snow's hive. It begs for fic, my friends! :)

I actually thought of that! How this and Legacy were like the primers for fic focusing on the Wraith (or online RPGs! ;D), but the problem is it's SO well-done in the books. I bet it would be difficult to achieve that level of intricacy in a fic. But hopefully someone will try!

(Also, just a small curiosity... right after I finished Ouroboros, I started reading and watching Hemlock Grove. The word/symbol ouroboros is an arc-word for one of the side mysteries. The snake-eating-its-own-tail routinely pops up throughout the novel/season. :D I found it odd that I randomly read two VERY different books back to back that both mentioned it so heavily. :D)

Why thank you!

It is interesting that you read them back to back. I wasn't really familiar with the ouroboros before.

Did you notice the *cough* resemblance between Snow's Hive and The Five?

I knew enough to recognize the reference in Melissa's book, but then all of a sudden it was being explained to me in HG and I was all, "Yeah, thanks creepy werewolf guy, I got it." ;D

And yes! The surely-coincidental resemblance was lovely! I would have loved to see them all in the Wraith makeup. Especially AT. She'd be a lovely Wraith Queen. ;D

She would be a super scary Wraith queen! And I've always thought Helen should just keep all four of them. (Also did you see she kept the thing between Seeker and Guide?)

I did! That's the great thing about these books and Legacy... it was one thing when Fandemonium started and we got books written by actual fans (I still remember carrying around a beaten-up old copy of the very first one around Gatecon. I read it cover to cover in the Seattle airport waiting for my flight home :D), but your books are written by fans who share pretty much exactly my view of the series. So that's a LOT of fun for me. ;D

It's an awful lot of fun to write! (I think you need to write one. Really.)

From your lips to their ears! A nice Sam-and-Vala-centric novel, with the boys lending support. ;D

... for a certain definition of charming and dear.

I love them, mind you ...

For an excellent definition of charming and dear! Ok, the kind that eats people, but, details!

Hey, if a TV show can have Hannibal Lechter as a lead, and if that show produces copious amounts of fanfic, then a Wraith hive can be charming and dear. ;D

I think they're charming and dear! I mean, as top of the food chain predators go....

Okay, by comparison to Hannibal Lecter, they're charming and dear. They have genuinely functional relationships with one another, anyway.

I'm still stuck on wondering how Hemlock Grove is (since that, unlike Melissa's worm, is free on netflix currently and I'm broke till the end of the week for book purchases). Worth it to watch?

And yes, I rather think the functioning relationships with the Wraith Hives that you established could potentially be charming and dear. Why not?

I just really love them. Yes, they eat people for dinner, but they're really functional and kind of happy. Ok, even if Guide does storm around a bit! :)

Poor Sumner. He never seems to do well, in any universe. We've seen three alternates for him and he gets fed on in Prime, drowned in Elizabeth's past, and then killed doped up on Wraith enzyme in Ouroboros.

I really like the idea of an Atlantis story... without Atlantis! You know, if given the same circumstances upon arrival, but one different choice (they ALL leave for Athos instead of just a small team) and suddenly, you have a completely different outcome. Well done!

I wonder, would Commander Kell (of Sateda, who was willing to sacrifice regiments to make sure he and his chosen few escaped Sateda) have been a better "ally" for the Expedition to work with than Chief Cowen (who nearly constantly was cheating Sheppard and crew)? Hmmm... I'm really intrigued with the possibilities of this new universe! Okay, new series to be written!

Yeah, Sumner never wins, does he?

It's really fun. And then they all evacuate to Atlantis in the end...

I don't know how Kell would have done. But it can't be worse than Cowan, can it? You should commit fic! :)

Seeker was my favorite in this book. Daniel's open-minded, curious personality was perfect for cross-cultural dialogue and it makes sense he got Seeker's name and the bonding experience John didn't (not yet, anyhow, as somehow John and Guide are usually fated to run into each other, but that could be another story in this reality).

And, I'm sure many parents could relate to Snow and Guide's stresses with their headstrong equivalent of a teenage daughter. I'm not a parent, but she made me chuckle. :D

Seeker is very much Daniel's counterpart the same what that Guide is John's, yes. Which I do think will happen, but not the same way as Guide has never been the prisoner of the Genii.

Wraith parents don't have it any easier! That girl and her boyfriend, off in his Dart, doing crazy things! :D
