Oath Bound

I'm working on Oath Bound, the fifth book in the Order of the Air, with a full outline now and beginning to fill in. I've spent the morning researching Alexandria in the 1930s -- restaurants, coffeeshops, transportation, etc. I'm also trying to find Jerry's unique point of view. As is usual for all of my books, it starts with a song. This is Jerry's song for Oath Bound. The actual song begins around 1:10. Listen to it while you read the rest of this.

This is based on a poem by CP Cavafy, The God Abandons Antony. Cavafy is perhaps Alexandria's greatest modern poet, a gay man who died just two years before this story takes place. Jerry is in Cavafy's Alexandria, walking like Cavafy half in past and half in present, accompanied by the ghosts of what once was, ghosts Jerry's actions are invoking more and more strongly. (And yes, Jerry has a relationship at this point....)

If I could film these books and have you see them as I do, I would do a video montage with this song -- with Jerry in Alexandria and Alma, Lewis and Mitch's terrible mission into the heart of the new war juxtaposed like Pippin's song in the Return of the King, wars old and new, carnage carved on stone and beneath the wings of planes, Jerry's shades of the Canopic Way fading into village children running beneath the shades of fighter wings, dust or mustard gas rising in yellow clouds. Jerry's hands on stone, blood and gold. Lewis' hands on steel.

As Jerry attempts to solve the mystery of the lost tomb of Alexander, he's exploring the death of a world. Perhaps it's a world he once loved. This trailer for the movie Agora is perfect -- watch it with the volume off while you listen to Alexandra Leaving. For Jerry to return to this time in thought is terrifying, and yet he must if he would find what was hidden in 391 AD.

And yet even as he does, the world Between the Wars is also dying. The Italians have invaded Ethiopia. His friends are flying into the danger zone impelled by promises they will not break. This is a real newsreel from the time (Warning for some disturbing pictures of casualties.) Jerry's world is passing away as surely as anything dug from beneath the sand, and the shape of the future is in his hands.

I hope I can find the words to do justice to the story I see.

In addition to fictional women driving fast cars, motorcycles, and starships, watchers have spotted Amelia Earhart, Jacqueline Cochran, Bessie Coleman, and other real pilots.
